Moving & Stuff

I am in the midst of moving, not a single-day event but more of a lengthy process that has stretched over a year. From signing on a realtor to facing the overwhelming task of 48 years of accumulated stuff to incorporating puppy training—a labour of love—I am experiencing a grief process as I adjust to my father no longer being available for sharing an idea or cheering his astute assessment of current affairs.

I have acknowledged I’m an archivist for my family, the photographer who has the albums, electronic files, and I love books as much as some enjoy wine or spending time with friends. Books are much like those pursuits they don’t mind if a glass is present and reconnecting to a book is akin to catching up with a friend.

The three categories that captured my attention were disposing of garbage at the curb, taking it to the recycling centre, and having it carried away by the junk service. There were also items that could be donated, recycled, or returned to their rightful owners.

The sale of the house took less than a day, thanks to my efforts to ensure the home was less cluttered and to show the solid bones of the sturdy bungalow. My realtor’s expert steering of the listing, there were 5 viewings on the same day, and within 24 hours, the deal was finalized.

No stress. I had almost 12 weeks to find my own piece of real estate, pack up, and be ready for closing on the house, which turned out to be a condo in a smaller community. It’s been a busy couple of weeks as I moved out of my home, many thanks to my neighbour, good friends, and dear brother. We made the closing time with half an hour to spare. As the closing of the home and the condo were a week apart, I was in effect homeless. My friend offered me shelter with her mother-in-law, a lovely lady of 87 years old who welcomed me and my canine companion for just over a week.

The renovations to my prior home started the day after I moved out, and it’s nice to know it’s a renovation project, not a demolition. The unboxing process continues. This week’s highlight was setting up my desktop computer and following up on some damage to furniture during the moving phase. I’m grateful to friends who assisted me in setting up my kitchen and helped to rehabilitate my buffet and credenza. It’s also learning about the town, where services are located and changing addresses on various government identification documents. Amazon has found me at my new place, and I will end on the late arrival of spring, it’s May 3rd, and I was wearing my winter coat on our evening walk, the good point was that the stars were not blocked by clouds. Namaste.
