I usually post a holiday blog post prior to the holidays and so it happens in my new retired status I’m busier than ever. I did assemble a tree to decorate the whimsical season though the headlines from the news tend to place a bucket of cold water on the Season’s Greetings we’re trying to engage in. More strife, more economic grimness, bah humbug would capture the mood most days.
The world is embattled as climate change is upon us, and even if you’re of the mind it’s a natural pattern we seem to have more dramatic weather than previously. Floods, change in snow patterns, here the great white north is an hour outside the greater Toronto area; even today the thermometer is reading 9 degrees Celsius. Rain anyone the snow, that arrived to provide a White Christmas, is rapidly changing to slush.
Getting back to world headlines, it is sobering to hear of the strife and warring in the middle East, east Europe, and civil wars that don’t seem to capture the news headlines but are impacting the lives of many. As a boomer I recall the cold war that today seems a great deal warmer, and one searches the horizon for a transformational servant leader of a nation that can mediate the discourse or get some discourse to happen amongst fractious groups. Even in my own country we seem to be headed into turbulent political processes as the government of nine years will likely face a non-confidence vote. No one seems to have solutions to the challenges faced by the nation. Groceries, fuel, service fees, and taxes keep rising and a number of people are faced with precarious employment, interest rates still high, and yet many employers have jobs unfilled.
The new year is usually anticipated as a positive event, a turning of the page to accomplish what could not be done in the current year. The new year will be encumbered with leftover angst, tribal conflicts, and the inauguration of a new USA president, well a recycled one, who if you follow his train of thought (don’t get too lost) there is potential strife between friends related to trade, border security, and autonomy to run our own nation. I don’t have answers and I don’t think I’m on anyone’s speed dial to access my thoughts. Good thing I have a blog, here’s my final thought this month–may the year 2025 be full of blessings, health, happiness, and affordable. May you have family and friends to spend time with, and may the universe provide for all your needs. Now you will need to work, budget accordingly, and take advantage of occasions when you can do conscious acts of kindness. Namaste.
